Old vinyl flooring is one of the most consistently asbestos-positive materials we encounter across Surrey. Nine-inch and twelve-inch vinyl floor tiles manufactured before the late 1980s were produced with asbestos as a binding agent. Sheet lino from the same era contains it too. But the most overlooked hazard is the black mastic adhesive used to stick both tiles and sheet flooring to the subfloor. That black glue — which looks like old tar and shows up in almost every older Surrey kitchen, bathroom and basement — often contains asbestos at high concentrations, and it's more friable than the tile itself. Sometimes the black adhesive can be safely encapsulated with a skim coat or new flooring on top — this is a legitimate approach when the tile itself is being left in place and the mastic is in good condition and fully adhered.
